• Phase III Facilities Improvements Scheduled for Summer 2022

The completion of the third phase of the District’s Phase III Facilities Improvement projects is on schedule for the summer of 2022.  The projects were included in the District’s Phase III Facilities Improvement Bond Referendum and approved by the voters in October 2018.  These improvements are part of the Board of Education’s commitment to providing safe, secure and welcoming learning environments for the coming years. Most of the work is being completed when buildings are less occupied during the summer months over a three-year period. Visitors to the buildings in the summer should be aware of the construction areas and watch for signs directing them to relocated offices/classrooms/programs.

Renovations of the Grove Street building at Malta Avenue Elementary School include reconstruction of the kitchen and the gymnasium, renovations to the first floor, stairwell and exterior courtyard.  The Middle School will see renovations to five science classrooms, bathrooms, boys and girls locker rooms, plus corridor locker replacements.  The remaining heat pump replacements (HVAC) and related control systems will occur at the High School.  In late summer, rehabilitation of the fields on Ballston Avenue (in front of the Middle School) will begin and are scheduled for completion in late Fall.

Beyond that, the District is examining the roof of the High School and developing a plan for replacement of the 25 year old roofing materials and developing a five year facilities improvement plan (as required by the NYS). Information about the three-year plan is located on these Facilities Improvement Project pages.

Phase III Facilities Improvements Completed - Summer 2021

It was an active summer for improvements at the Ballston Spa Central School District. Several projects that were included in the District’s Phase III Facilities Improvement Bond Referendum (that was approved by the voters in October 2018) were completed during the summer break.  Specifically, the second grade, computer, music and art classrooms, as well as hallway improvements, were completed on the second floor in the Grove Street section of the Malta Avenue Elementary School. The outdated science classrooms and bathrooms at the Middle School were reconstructed during the second summer of the three year phased project. Gymnasium windows were also replaced around the top of the main Middle School gymnasium (a year ahead of schedule).

High School renovations included the replacement of 50 HVAC and related control systems in first floor classrooms (second floor classrooms were upgraded last summer). The proposed athletic improvements included the construction of a new multipurpose field on the south end of the campus and a new athletic storage building, both of which are now complete and being utilized.  Additional field improvements will be completed as approved and scheduled in the coming months and/or during upcoming summer breaks.

Outdoor work included parking lot and roadway projects including the addition of a drop-off lane in front of the Middle School and the addition of more student parking in front of the High School.

In addition to internal building security enhancements, a new building greeter station was completed at the entrance to the District Office, completing our safety renovations throughout the buildings to provide for secure, staffed entrances to all public buildings.

Our cleaning staff did an outstanding job this summer getting our classrooms and buildings ready for the return of students and staff.  In addition to routine repairs, maintenance staff surveyed and performed preventive maintenance on school building roofs, air conditioners and kitchen coolers.

The completion of the third phase of the District’s Phase III Facilities Improvement projects is schedule for the summer of 2022. Additional work will be completed on the first floor and basement of the Grove Street building at Malta Avenue Elementary School including the reconstruction of the kitchen and the gymnasium, the science classrooms and bathrooms in the final wing of the Middle School will be completed and the HVAC and related control systems will be replaced in the remainder of the High School.

Beyond that, the District will be examining the roof of the High School and developing a plan for replacement of the 25 year old roofing materials, rehabilitating the fields in front of the Middle School and developing a five year facilities improvement plan (required by the NYS).

Phase III Facilities Improvements Being Completed - Winter 2021

The district has started the multiyear facilities improvement projects identified in Phase III of the facilities master plan (2010). These improvements are part of the Board’s commitment to provide safe, secure and productive learning environments for the coming years. After receiving the support of district voters in the fall of 2018, the necessary designs and regulatory approvals were secured, and the BOE awarded bids to begin the projects in the spring of 2020. Most of the work is being completed when buildings are unoccupied during the summer months over a three year time period.

The improvement projects began in the summer of 2020 with the start of the renovations in the Grove Street section of the Malta Avenue School including the updating of third floor classrooms, lockers/hallways and the auditorium. Work began on the outdated classrooms, lockers, and bathrooms at the Middle School. High School renovations included the replacement of the original cogeneration equipment and the replacement of classroom heating and cooling systems. The athletic improvements included the construction of a new multipurpose field on the south end of the campus and a new athletic storage building.
