Facilities Improvement Projects

  • Facilities Improvements during the Summer of 2021

It was an active summer for improvements at the Ballston Spa Central School District. Several projects that were included in the District’s Phase III Facilities Improvement Bond Referendum (that was approved by the voters in October 2018) were completed during the summer break.  Specifically, the second grade, computer, music and art classrooms, as well as hallway improvements, were completed on the second floor in the Grove Street section of the Malta Avenue Elementary School. The outdated science classrooms and bathrooms at the Middle School were reconstructed during the second summer of the three year phased project. Gymnasium windows were also replaced around the top of the main Middle School gymnasium (a year ahead of schedule).

High School renovations included the replacement of 50 HVAC and related control systems in first floor classrooms (second floor classrooms were upgraded last summer). The proposed athletic improvements included the construction of a new multipurpose field on the south end of the campus and a new athletic storage building, both of which are now complete and being utilized.  Additional field improvements will be completed as approved and scheduled in the coming months and/or during upcoming summer breaks.

Outdoor work included parking lot and roadway projects including the addition of a drop-off lane in front of the Middle School and the addition of more student parking in front of the High School.

In addition to internal building security enhancements, a new building greeter station was completed at the entrance to the District Office, completing our safety renovations throughout the buildings to provide for secure, staffed entrances to all public buildings.

Our cleaning staff did an outstanding job this summer getting our classrooms and buildings ready for the return of students and staff.  In addition to routine repairs, maintenance staff surveyed and performed preventive maintenance on school building roofs, air conditioners and kitchen coolers.

The completion of the third phase of the District’s Phase III Facilities Improvement projects is schedule for the summer of 2022. Additional work will be completed on the first floor and basement of the Grove Street building at Malta Avenue Elementary School including the reconstruction of the kitchen and the gymnasium, the science classrooms and bathrooms in the final wing of the Middle School will be completed and the HVAC and related control systems will be replaced in the remainder of the High School.

Beyond that, the District will be examining the roof of the High School and developing a plan for replacement of the 25 year old roofing materials, rehabilitating the fields in front of the Middle School and developing a five year facilities improvement plan (required by the NYS).

Facilities Improvement Project Update (January 2017)
The district has been undergoing facilities renovations and upgrades over the past 7 years and completed the projects on time and under budget. A proposal was approved by voters last May to invest savings into additional site work and renovations. Plans were developed and are in the final approval stages with SED to install public restrooms in the old bus garage next to the stadium field for use during outdoor events and to complete related site work in the adjacent area including drainage, fencing, blacktop, lighting and minor demolition to accommodate maintenance vehicles.

The Middle School north parking area will be completely rebuilt with a new subsurface, base, top coat and striping. The Middle School Weight Room will be renovated to create a new cardiovascular Physical Education station, including new equipment, floor, electrical upgrades, lighting and painting. New equipment has also been secured for the High School Weight Room and dugouts are planned to be installed at the Varsity Softball Field.

Facilities Referendum Proposal Approved by Community at May 2016 Vote
The district has been undergoing facilities renovations and upgrades over the past 6 years and has completed the projects on time and approximately $1 million under budget. We developed a proposal that was considered by voters in May 2016 to invest this savings in additional site work at the Middle School and make needed improvements to our athletic facilities.

The proposal includes installing public restrooms in the old bus garage next to the stadium field for use during events and related site work to the adjacent area including drainage, fencing, blacktop, lighting and minor demolition to accommodate maintenance vehicles. The Middle School north parking area will be completely rebuilt with a new subsurface, base, top coat and striping.  The Middle School Weight Room will be renovated to create a new cardiovascular Physical Education station, including new equipment, floor, electrical upgrades, lighting and painting. New equipment will also be secured for the High School Weight Room and dugouts will be installed at the Varsity Softball Field.

The district will complete all the needed planning and seek necessary approvals during the coming months. Final plans will then be submitted to the State Education Department for necessary approvals and projects will be scheduled to begin in the spring of 2017.
